Studio Window
The Studio window is We Love Lights' powerful interface for advanced control, configuration, and management of your smart home. While the menu bar handles quick tasks, Studio gives you comprehensive access to every feature.
Opening Studio Window
There are several ways to open the Studio window:
From Menu Bar
- Click the We Love Lights icon in the menu bar
- Scroll to the bottom of the menu
- Click "Open Studio" or "Studio Window"
From Dock
- Click the We Love Lights icon in the Dock
- If Studio is already open, this brings it to the foreground
With Keyboard Shortcut
- Set up a custom keyboard shortcut in preferences
- Use it to open Studio from anywhere
Studio Interface Overview
The Studio window is divided into several key areas:

Located at the top of the window:
- Bridge Selector: Switch between connected bridges
- Search Bar: Find devices, rooms, scenes quickly
- Actions Menu: Quick access to common actions
- Settings/Preferences: App configuration
Sidebar Navigation
The left sidebar organizes your smart home:
- Rooms & Zones: All groups organized by type
- All Lights: Complete light list
- Scenes: All available scenes
- Sensors: Motion sensors and status sensors
- Switches: Smart switches and buttons
- Plugs: Smart plug outlets
- Settings: Bridge and app configuration
Main Content Area
The center/right area displays detailed controls for whatever is selected in the sidebar.
Navigating Studio
Selecting Items
Click any item in the sidebar to view its details:
- Room/Zone: Shows all lights in that room with individual controls
- Light: Shows detailed color, brightness, and settings
- Scene: Shows scene details and options to modify
- Sensor: Shows status and configuration options
- Switch: Shows button configuration and rules
Multi-Selection
Select multiple items for batch operations:
- Hold ⌘ (Command) while clicking items
- Or click and drag to select multiple items (if supported)
- Actions apply to all selected items
Back Navigation
- Use back arrow button to return to previous view
- Or click the sidebar item again to refresh
Bridge Management
Viewing Connected Bridges
The bridge selector (top of window) shows:
- All connected bridges
- Current bridge (highlighted)
- Connection status (green=local, blue=remote, red=offline)
Switching Bridges
- Click the bridge selector dropdown
- Choose a different bridge
- Studio immediately switches to that bridge's devices
Adding Bridges
- Click bridge selector
- Select "Add Bridge"
- Follow the bridge discovery process
Bridge Settings
- Select a bridge from the dropdown
- Click gear icon or "Bridge Settings"
- Configure:
- Bridge name
- Connection details
- Remote access settings
- Auto-reconnect options
Search Functionality
The search bar helps you find anything quickly.
Using Search
- Click the search field in the header
- Type any part of a name:
- Device names
- Room names
- Scene names
- Sensor names
- Results appear in real-time
- Click a result to navigate to it
Search Tips
- Partial Matching: "liv" finds "Living Room"
- Case Insensitive: No need to match capitalization
- Multi-word: Searches all parts of names
- Clear with ESC: Press Escape to clear search
Advanced Search Features
- Filter by Type: Show only lights, only scenes, etc.
- Filter by Status: Show only on/off devices
- Filter by Room: Search within specific room
Main Content Area Controls
What you see in the main area depends on what's selected.
Room/Zone View
When viewing a room or zone:
- Group Controls: Overall on/off, brightness for entire room
- Individual Lights: List of all lights in the room
- Quick Scenes: Room-specific scenes
- Room Settings: Rename, hide, or delete room
Light Detail View
When viewing a single light:
- Power Toggle: Turn light on/off
- Brightness Slider: Adjust brightness (0-100%)
- Color Pickers: Multiple color selection methods
- Light Info: Model, type, status
- Light Settings: Rename, assign to rooms, hide
Scene Detail View
When viewing a scene:
- Activate Button: Apply the scene immediately
- Scene Preview: Shows which lights and their colors
- Modify Scene: Change scene settings
- Overwrite Scene: Update with current light states
Sensor View
When viewing a motion sensor:
- Current Status: Motion detected, temperature, light level
- Battery Level: Remaining battery percentage
- Configuration: Sensitivity, timeout settings
- Rules: Automation rules using this sensor
Switch View
When viewing a smart switch:
- Button Layout: Visual representation of buttons
- Button Actions: What each button does
- Configuration: Customize button behaviors
- Battery Level: Remaining battery
Organizing Your Setup
Studio provides powerful organization tools.
Drag and Drop Reordering
Rearrange items in the sidebar:
- Click and hold an item
- Drag it to the desired position
- Release to drop
- New order is saved automatically
Hiding Unused Items
Clean up your interface by hiding items:
- Right-click (or Control+click) an item
- Select "Hide" from the context menu
- Item disappears from lists
To unhide:
- Go to Settings → Hidden Items
- Find the hidden item
- Click "Show" or "Unhide"
Renaming Devices
Give devices meaningful names:
- Select the device
- Click the name field in the detail view
- Type a new name
- Press Enter or Return to save
Changes sync with your bridge and other apps.
Custom Groups
Create custom zones or groups:
- Go to Rooms section
- Click "Add Group" or + button
- Name your group
- Select lights to include
- Save the group
Actions Menu
The actions menu (••• icon) provides quick access to common tasks.
Common Actions
- Refresh All: Reload devices from bridge
- All Lights Off: Emergency all-off
- Create Scene: Save current state as scene
- Add Device: Manually add a device
- Settings: Open preferences
Batch Actions
With multiple items selected:
- Turn On/Off: Control all selected items
- Set Brightness: Apply same brightness to all
- Apply Scene: Apply scene to selected lights
- Hide/Show: Batch hide or show items
Working with Multiple Windows
Studio supports multiple windows for advanced workflows.
Opening Additional Windows
On macOS:
- Go to File → New Window (if supported)
- Or open different views side by side

- Compare rooms: View two rooms simultaneously

Customizing Studio Appearance
Personalize Studio to your preferences.
Window Size
- Resize window by dragging edges or corners

- Collapse sidebar for more space in content area
Sidebar Width
- Drag the divider between sidebar and content
- Make sidebar narrower for more room in main area
- Double-click divider to reset to default

Studio Won't Open

Slow Performance
Problem: Studio feels sluggish or unresponsive
