Bridge Discovery
Learn how to find and connect your Philips Hue or deCONZ bridge to We Love Lights
Bridge Discovery
Connecting your bridge is the first and most important step to using We Love Lights. This guide covers both automatic and manual discovery methods for Philips Hue and Phoscon deCONZ bridges.
Supported Bridge Types
We Love Lights works with:
Philips Hue Bridge
- The official Philips Hue Bridge (round or square models)
- Uses Hue API V1 for maximum compatibility
- Supports both local and remote connections
- Most common and widely used bridge
Phoscon deCONZ Bridge
- ConBee USB stick with deCONZ software
- RaspBee Raspberry Pi module
- Compatible with wider range of Zigbee devices
- Local connections only
Note: Bluetooth-only Philips Hue devices (without a bridge) are not supported by We Love Lights.
Automatic Bridge Discovery
The easiest way to connect your bridge is through automatic discovery.
Steps for Automatic Discovery
-
Ensure Same Network
- Your Mac and bridge must be on the same WiFi/Ethernet network
- Check your Mac's WiFi connection
- Verify your bridge has a solid blue light (Hue) or is accessible via web interface (deCONZ)
-
Start Discovery
- Click the We Love Lights icon in your menu bar
- If no bridges are configured, you'll see "Add Bridge" or "Find Bridge"
- Click to start automatic discovery
-
Wait for Detection
- We Love Lights will scan your network
- This typically takes 5-10 seconds
- Found bridges will appear in a list
-
Select Your Bridge
- If multiple bridges are found, select the one you want to connect
- The bridge name and IP address will be displayed
What If Automatic Discovery Fails?
If We Love Lights can't find your bridge automatically:
- Verify network connectivity (same network for both devices)
- Check that your bridge is powered on and functioning
- Try manual discovery (see below)
- Consult the troubleshooting guide
Manual Bridge Addition
If automatic discovery doesn't work, you can add your bridge manually using its IP address.
Finding Your Bridge IP Address
For Philips Hue Bridge
Method 1: Router Admin Panel
- Log into your router's admin panel
- Look for connected devices list
- Find a device named "Philips-hue" or similar
- Note the IP address
Method 2: discovery.meethue.com
- Visit https://discovery.meethue.com in your browser
- Philips provides a discovery service that finds bridges on your network
- The IP address will be displayed
Method 3: Philips Hue App
- Open the official Philips Hue mobile app
- Go to Settings → Hue Bridges
- Tap your bridge name
- Look for "IP Address" in the bridge information
For deCONZ Bridge
deCONZ Phoscon App
- Open the Phoscon web interface (usually
http://[raspberry-pi-ip]:80) - The IP address is in your browser's address bar
- Default port is typically 80
Adding Bridge Manually
-
Open Bridge Settings
- Open We Love Lights Studio window
- Go to bridge management or settings
- Look for "Add Bridge Manually" option

- Port: Usually auto-filled (80 for Hue, check deCONZ settings)
- IP Address: Enter the bridge's IP address (e.g.,
-
Save and Connect
- Click Save or Connect
- Proceed to authentication (next step)
Bridge Authentication
Once your bridge is discovered (automatically or manually), you must authenticate We Love Lights.

- Your bridge is now connected
- Device discovery begins automatically
For deCONZ Bridge
-
Unlock Gateway
- Open the Phoscon web interface
- Go to Settings → Gateway
- Click "Unlock Gateway" (valid for 60 seconds)
-
Connect in We Love Lights
- Return to We Love Lights
- Click Connect or Authenticate
- The app will create an API key while the gateway is unlocked

- Devices are loaded from deCONZ
Security Note
Authentication creates a unique API key that We Love Lights stores securely in your Mac's Keychain. This key allows the app to communicate with your bridge without requiring repeated authentication.
Connection Verification
After authentication, verify your connection:
Check Connected Status
- Menu Bar: The We Love Lights icon should show your bridge as connected
- Studio Window: Bridge status indicator shows green or "Connected"
- Device List: You should see your rooms, lights, and devices
Device Discovery
We Love Lights will automatically:
- Load all rooms and zones from your bridge
- Discover all lights, including color, white ambiance, and dimmable types
- Find smart plugs, motion sensors, switches
- Import existing scenes
This process is automatic and takes 5-15 seconds depending on setup size.
Managing Multiple Bridges
We Love Lights supports connecting to multiple bridges simultaneously.
Adding a Second (or Third) Bridge
- Open Studio Window
- Go to Bridge Settings or use the bridge selector
- Click "Add Bridge"
- Follow the same discovery and authentication steps
- Switch between bridges using the bridge selector
See the Multi-Bridge Setup guide for advanced multi-bridge workflows.
Bridge Connection Status
Status Indicators
- Connected: Green indicator, all features available
- Connecting: Yellow/orange, attempting to establish connection
- Disconnected: Red indicator, no connection to bridge
- Remote: Blue indicator (if using remote access)
Connection Heartbeat
We Love Lights maintains a regular "heartbeat" connection to your bridge:
- Checks connection status every few seconds
- Automatically detects and reports connection loss
- Attempts auto-reconnection when connection is restored
Troubleshooting
Bridge Not Found
Problem: Automatic discovery doesn't find any bridges
Solutions:
- Verify Mac and bridge are on same network
- Check bridge is powered on (solid blue light for Hue)
- Try manual discovery with IP address
- Temporarily disable VPN if active
- Check firewall settings aren't blocking discovery
Authentication Fails
Problem: Button press doesn't authenticate
Solutions:
- Ensure you press button within 30-second window
- Press button firmly until it lights up
- Try authentication process again
- Restart bridge if problem persists
Bridge Shows Offline
Problem: Bridge was connected but now shows offline
Solutions:
- Check network connectivity
- Verify bridge hasn't changed IP address (set static IP in router)
- Restart We Love Lights
- See troubleshooting guide
Can't Connect to deCONZ
Problem: deCONZ bridge won't connect
Solutions:
- Verify deCONZ gateway is running
- Check Phoscon web interface is accessible
